This is caused by the user profile being named 'User' or using any other reserved name/character.
This can be resolved by creating a new user profile and copying all of the user's information from the old profile to their new, current profile.
To open any link in a new tab, preserving your position in the current article, just hold down the <CTRL> key on your keyboard before clicking the link or click using your mouse wheel.
