Gantt Chart

The schedule of activities for a project. A Gantt Chart shows start and finish dates, critical and non-critical activities, slack time, and predecessor relationships.

General Conditions

A written portion of the contract documents set forth by the owner stipulating the contractor’s minimum acceptable performance requirements including the rights, responsibilities and relationships of the parties involved in the performance of the contract. General conditions are usually included in the book of specifications but are sometimes found in the architectural drawings.

General Contractor (GC)

Properly licensed individual or company having primary (prime) responsibility for the work. Responsible for the day-to-day oversight of a construction site, management of vendors and trades and communication of information to involved parties throughout the course of a building project. A general contractor is responsible for providing all of the material, labor, equipment (such as engineering vehicles and tools) and services necessary for the construction of the project. The general contractor hires specialized subcontractors to perform all or portions of the construction work.

General Contracting (the traditional method)

When a prime or main contractor bids the entire work AFTER the final design, plans and specifications are complete and have been approved by the owner. (Contrast with: Design-Build Construction and Fast Track Construction)

General Ledger (GL)

A company’s set of numbered accounts for its accounting records.

Glance/GoToMeeting

Remote desktop application that enables participants to see or share each others’ desktop.

Goldmine

The legacy customer relationship management system used by the CDC Sales and Retention Teams.

GoToMeeting (GTM)

Allows the host of a meeting to share his/her computer screen with attendees. This is frequently used for meetings and product demonstrations in which one or more persons is not on-site.

Grading

In civil engineering and construction it is the work of ensuring a level base, or one with a specified slope, for construction work, such as a foundation, the base course for a road or a railway, landscape and garden improvements or surface drainage. Refers to the inclination of a surface when compared to the horizontal level. Below grade refers to portions that are below ground level.

Gross Margin or Markup

As opposed to Straight Margin or Markups, the Gross markup method takes bid cost and divides that bid cost by the remainder of 1 minus the markup percentage.
